Minneapolis police arrested a 22-year-old man on a weapons charge on Tuesday, August 25, after a traffic stop turned up a firearm in his car, the department said. Law enforcement sources later told Liz Collin of Alpha News, a Minnesota conservative outlet, that officers searched the apartment he shares with Rep. Ilhan Omar’s son that night and recovered guns and ammunition. Police have not confirmed the search, and have not confirmed any connection to the congresswoman’s son.
The man is Abdulrahman Abdi, 22. Asked about the apartment, the Minneapolis Police Department said a man who is not the congresswoman’s son had been arrested earlier that day, and named Abdi. The department did not say whether Omar’s son was arrested, charged or suspected of anything. Abdi was booked into the Hennepin County Jail just after noon on Tuesday and released just before midnight on Wednesday, records show.
Omar’s son, Adnan, was not accused of any wrongdoing. Neither was the congresswoman. The police account made public so far ties the weapons charge to Abdi alone, and the department said the investigation is ongoing.
The roommate’s record
Abdi has been convicted at least 10 times since 2022, according to court records reviewed by the Daily Mail. Nine were misdemeanors, and most involved driving. The list includes an October 2025 speeding conviction for going 70 in a 55 zone while operating on a revoked license, a 2023 conviction for going 56 in a 30 zone, and a 2022 conviction for using a cell phone behind the wheel.
The one felony came out of a 2024 incident. Police said Abdi drove a Jeep Grand Cherokee at 108 mph in St. Paul while racing alongside another vehicle. He pleaded guilty to fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle. His sentence was one day in jail and two years of supervised probation.
It started with a traffic stop
The stop came earlier that day. An officer pulled over a vehicle in the 200 block of 11th Street South in Minneapolis. The driver, later identified as Abdi, was cited for driving after cancellation and no proof of insurance, then released at the scene.
Police impounded the vehicle. During that process, officers recovered a firearm from inside it. Investigators then tracked Abdi to an address on Marquette Avenue, where they arrested him without incident. He was booked just after noon. Alpha News reported that officers executed a search warrant at the apartment later that night.
Omar’s son has not been charged
A search of a shared home does not mean everyone who lives there broke the law. The police statement does not accuse Adnan of owning the recovered firearm, and it does not say he faces any charge. The account connecting the apartment to Omar’s son rests on unnamed law enforcement sources, and neither the police department nor the congresswoman’s office has confirmed it.
Several basic details remain blank. Police have not said whether any search took place, how many guns were recovered, what type they were, or who they belonged to. Representatives for Omar had not commented as of the initial reports.
The right pounced online
The story moved fast on X. Conservative commentator Benny Johnson posted, “Not a good look for Ilhan Omar.” His post gave the son the wrong surname.
The volume was loud enough that the search became a national talking point within hours, before police had confirmed that any search took place.
Omar’s ICE accusation from December
This is not the first time Adnan has been at the center of a fight between his mother and law enforcement. On December 14, 2025, Omar said Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents had pulled her son over the previous day and let him go only after he produced his passport.
ICE pushed back hard. Todd Lyons, then the agency’s acting director, said ICE had “absolutely zero record of its officers or agents pulling over Congresswoman Omar’s son,” and said the accusation was part of a “ridiculous effort to unfairly demonize law enforcement officers.” Lyons left the agency in May 2026.
Omar’s record on guns
Part of what drove the reaction is Omar’s record on firearms. She voted for the 2022 assault weapons ban and has backed stricter gun control laws. Critics were quick to point out the contrast between those positions and the guns reported to have come out of her son’s shared apartment.
The Minneapolis Democrat has also been a frequent target of the Trump administration, which has pressed hard on Minnesota’s Somali community during a federal fraud investigation run by the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota. That backdrop turned a local weapons arrest into a fight with national stakes almost immediately.
What police haven’t said
The Minneapolis Police Department declined to give further detail beyond confirming Abdi’s arrest and the ongoing inquiry. It has released no search warrant, no affidavit, and no account of what officers were looking for.
For now the confirmed facts are narrow. A man with a long driving record was stopped, a gun turned up in his impounded car, and he was arrested. Everything past that rests on unnamed sources: the search, the address, and the guns said to have been found there. The investigation is still active.
Abdi walked out of Hennepin County Jail late on Wednesday, August 26, after being booked on a weapons charge. It is not clear whether the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office has filed charges. Omar’s son faces nothing, at least on the record as it stands.
