King Charles just shared a number no British king or queen has ever made public. Since taking the throne in 2022, he has paid more than £30 million in personal taxes. In American money, that comes out to about $41 million.
That makes him the first reigning monarch in British history to put his personal tax bill out in the open. He didn’t have to do it. There’s no law forcing his hand. He chose to.
Here’s What He Actually Paid
Buckingham Palace broke the figures down year by year. In the 2023-24 tax year, his first full year as king, Charles paid £11.7 million, around $15 million. The next year, 2024-25, that climbed to £12.9 million, about $17 million. Add in the taxes from the months right after Queen Elizabeth II died in September 2022, and the total tops £30 million.
The jump from one year to the next was about £1.2 million, which works out to a 10.3 percent increase. For comparison, regular British workers saw their wages grow about 3.4 percent in the same stretch. So the king’s tax bill grew roughly three times faster than the average paycheck.
He’s Legally Allowed to Pay Nothing
Here’s the part that throws most people. The British monarch is exempt from income tax, capital gains tax and inheritance tax. By law, Charles could pay zero. He doesn’t owe a single pound.
So why does he write the check? It goes back to 1993. After a public fight over royal money, Queen Elizabeth II started voluntarily paying taxes. Charles did the same during his decades as Prince of Wales, paying tax on income from the Duchy of Cornwall. The new wrinkle is that he’s now telling everyone the total.
The money he pays tax on comes from his private income. That includes the Duchy of Lancaster, a huge collection of land and property that brought in £25.2 million last year. It also covers his private estates at Balmoral in Scotland and Sandringham in England, plus personal investments.
Why He’s Suddenly So Open About Money
This didn’t come out of nowhere. The palace has been getting hammered over the finances of Charles’s younger brother, the former Prince Andrew, now just Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. He was stripped of his titles in 2025.
The Andrew headlines got ugly. He’s under investigation for misconduct in public office tied to his friendship with the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. He was also pushed out of a sprawling royal estate where it turned out he’d been paying almost no rent. A committee in Parliament is now digging into how that living setup ever worked.
The tax reveal is the palace trying to get ahead of all that. A spokesman said the choice was personal and meant to “encourage wider understanding of our accountability.”
The $180 Million Nobody Voted For
The tax bill is one number. The Sovereign Grant is another, and it’s much bigger. That’s the public funding from taxpayers that pays for the monarchy’s official work, staff, travel and palace upkeep.
For 2026-27, the grant jumps to £137.9 million, about $180 million. More than half of the current money goes toward fixing up royal palaces, including a long renovation of Buckingham Palace that has cost £369 million.
To put that in perspective, back in 2016-17, before the big repair work started, the grant was £42.8 million. It’s now more than double that.
Critics Aren’t Buying It
Not everyone is impressed. Graham Smith, who runs the anti-monarchy group Republic, said there’s “no possible justification” for spending close to £100 million on an institution that exists “to provide us with one person.”
He also pointed at a real gap. The palace told us what Charles paid, but not what he earned. We don’t know his total income, and we don’t know whether he pays the top 45 percent tax rate. Without those pieces, the tax figure tells only part of the story.
A Green Party member of Parliament, Sian Berry, is pushing an amendment that would force the king, the Royal Household, the Royal Archive and both royal duchies to follow freedom of information rules.
The King’s Private Fortune
Beyond the taxes and the grant, Charles sits on a personal fortune that’s hard to fully count. In 2024-25 he received £28.7 million, about $38 million, from the Privy Purse. That money comes from the Duchy of Lancaster and belongs to him personally. He uses it for a mix of official costs and private spending.
Then there’s the stuff that’s hard to put a price tag on. He inherited Balmoral and Sandringham from his mother. He owns art and jewelry. His stamp collection alone was estimated at more than £100 million in 2023. One analysis that same year put his total net worth at around £1.8 billion.
So when the palace says he’s among Britain’s highest taxpayers, that’s true. It’s also true because he’s among Britain’s wealthiest people.
Prince William Joined In
Charles wasn’t the only one opening his books. On the same day, his son Prince William revealed his own tax payment for the first time. William paid £7.76 million in income and capital gains tax over the 2024-25 year.
William’s private money comes mostly from the Duchy of Cornwall, a hereditary estate worth around a billion pounds. It owns about 130,000 acres, and some of what it holds is unexpected. Its properties include The Oval cricket ground and Dartmoor prison. Last year the duchy reported a profit of £22.9 million, about $30 million.
William also rolled out a 10-year plan to put around £500 million ($685 million) into housing, environmental projects and local communities across five regions.
The King Is Skipping the Palace
Tucked into the same announcement was a piece of news that ends nearly two centuries of tradition. Charles and Queen Camilla will not move into Buckingham Palace once its renovation wraps up next year.
Instead, they’ll stay at Clarence House. Palace officials said keeping the couple out of the building means the public can get more access to it. Buckingham Palace will still serve as the ceremonial and administrative center of the monarchy. It just won’t be the king’s home.
That’s a real break. The building has been the monarch’s main London residence for almost 200 years, and Charles is walking away from it.
A New Yearly Routine
Charles plans to make this an annual thing. The tax disclosure will show up every year alongside the royal financial accounts. A palace spokesman put it plainly: “To put it simply, we continue to modernise and evolve.”
There’s a bigger picture here. Charles has talked about slimming down the monarchy and cutting costs since before the Andrew mess blew up. He’s trying to keep a 1,000-year-old institution relevant in a country that keeps asking why it needs a hereditary king at all.
The grant is set to shrink soon too. From 2027 to 2032, it’s scheduled to fall to £99.9 million a year, with no more palace refurbishment money attached.
So the headline number, $41 million in taxes, is real and it’s large. But it sits next to a $180 million public grant, a billion-pound estate for his son, and a net worth one analysis pegged at £1.8 billion. The king is paying more tax than almost anyone in Britain. He’s also richer than almost anyone in Britain. Both things are true at the same time.
