Italian Man Arrested for Pension Fraud Disguise Scheme

A 56-year-old unemployed former nurse in Italy was arrested after disguising himself as his deceased mother to fraudulently collect pension payments for months. The elaborate scheme unraveled when the man attempted to renew his mother’s identification card at a registry office in Borgo Virgilio, a town in northern Italy.

The fraud began after the man’s mother died in 2022, when he started illegally claiming her pension benefits. For his deception, he donned women’s clothing including a long skirt, lipstick, nail polish, jewelry, and old-fashioned earrings. He also wore a wig and heavy makeup while attempting to speak in a feminine voice, though masculine tones occasionally emerged during his performance.

However, the theatrical disguise failed to convince government employees at the municipal office. A suspicious office worker immediately became wary of the man’s unusual behavior and contacted superiors, who then alerted law enforcement. Town mayor Francesco Aporti later observed that the man’s hands clearly did not appear to belong to an 85-year-old woman.

The investigation took a disturbing turn when police conducted a search of the suspect’s residence. Authorities discovered the mummified remains of the man’s actual mother hidden in a room of his house, revealing the shocking extent of his deception. The grisly discovery added a macabre element to what had initially appeared to be a straightforward fraud case.

Meanwhile, the financial scope of the scheme became apparent as investigators determined the man had fraudulently collected thousands of euros through the pension payments over several months. The fraud continued undetected from the time of his mother’s death in 2022 until his failed attempt to renew her identification documents exposed the elaborate ruse.

Italian media quickly seized upon the bizarre story, dubbing it the “Mrs Doubtfire Scandal” after the 1993 Robin Williams film featuring a similar cross-dressing premise. The case has generated widespread discussion and social media attention throughout Italy, with many expressing both shock and dark humor about the theatrical nature of the crime.

Police have arrested and charged the man with fraud following their investigation, though authorities have not publicly identified the suspect. Officials are now considering whether additional criminal charges should be filed in connection with the concealment of his mother’s remains and the extended nature of the deception.

Town mayor Aporti reflected on the human tragedy underlying the sensational headlines, describing the situation as “a very sad story reflecting great loneliness.” His comments highlighted the social isolation that may have contributed to the man’s desperate and increasingly elaborate attempts to maintain his mother’s pension income.

While pension fraud occurs regularly across Italy and other countries, this particular case stands out due to its theatrical elements and the shocking discovery of the preserved remains. The incident has prompted discussions about social services and support systems for vulnerable individuals facing financial hardship.

Officials have used the case to emphasize that pension fraud carries serious legal penalties, regardless of the circumstances that may drive individuals to commit such crimes. The arrest serves as a stark reminder of the consequences facing those who attempt to defraud government benefit systems, even when desperation may be a motivating factor.
