A teenage girl was found stuffed inside a clothes dryer at a Key Largo home, and the only reason anyone knew to look was a 911 call she made herself. Deputies with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office pulled up to a house on Miramar Drive around 11:45 a.m. on June 21 after the teen reported she was being held hostage. The man who lived there, 53-year-old Christopher Michael Veit, now sits in jail facing a long list of felony charges.
The details that came out in the arrest report read like something nobody wants to imagine happening a few blocks from a beach. Deputies say Veit had planned the dryer hideout in advance, told the girl exactly what to do if police ever showed up, and then lied to their faces when they arrived. Here is what investigators say went down.
The 911 Call She Wasn’t Supposed to Make
The girl didn’t have her own phone when she called for help. According to the arrest report, Veit had taken it away from her earlier that day after she told him she wanted to go home. So she waited.
When Veit stepped outside to check on food he was cooking on the grill, she grabbed his phone off the kitchen counter, dialed 911, and told dispatchers she was being held against her will. She said “please hurry.” Then she did something smart under pressure: she deleted the call log so he wouldn’t notice what she’d done when he came back inside.
That deleted log almost didn’t matter, because Veit nearly talked his way out of it anyway. When deputies arrived, he denied that anyone else was at the home and acted like he had no clue what they were talking about. A sergeant pointed out that the 911 call had pinged from that exact address. Cornered, Veit admitted the call had come from his own phone number.
Hidden in the Dryer When the Patrol Cars Showed Up
Here’s the part that stuck with detectives. The dryer wasn’t a last-second panic move. Investigators say Veit had already coached the girl on the plan well before that Sunday. If law enforcement ever searched the house, she was supposed to climb inside the dryer and stay quiet.
According to deputies, the second Veit spotted the patrol vehicles, he ran back inside, confronted the girl, and asked whether she had called the police. Then he ordered her to get in the dryer. She did it because she was afraid of him, and he shut the door on her.
One account from the Miami Herald, picked up by multiple outlets, described her as bound and locked inside the appliance, not just placed there. After Veit finally agreed to let deputies in and search the home, they opened the dryer and found her sitting inside with the door closed. When officers asked Veit why he had lied about her being there, he looked down at the ground and said nothing.
A Two-Year Secret That Started on a Dating Site
The girl told investigators she first met Veit when she was 14 years old, through an online dating website. According to the report, the site was called “Seeking,” a platform built around so-called sugar daddy arrangements. She said Veit paid her $600 after their first encounter and told her the relationship had to stay a secret.
That arrangement ran for roughly two years, detectives say. The teen traveled to Key Largo more than once and had been staying at Veit’s home in the days leading up to the 911 call. He even bought her a Brightline train ticket so she could travel from Central Florida down to South Florida, then picked her up and drove her to the house.
The girl is from out of state, and her own mother had no idea where she was. The mom told deputies she didn’t know her daughter was in Monroe County and never gave permission for her to be with Veit. That’s part of why the charges include interference with child custody on top of everything else.
The Day It Turned Violent
The girl told investigators that things came to a head on Sunday when she said she wanted to go home. According to the report, Veit climbed on top of her on a bed, pressed his knee and his full weight onto her stomach to keep her from moving, and forcibly grabbed her bag and her cellphone.
She also alleged that Veit threatened to “do what I did before.” She told detectives she understood that to mean earlier incidents where he had slapped her repeatedly and held a pillow over her face. After deputies got her out of the dryer, she said she had been sexually assaulted and needed help. She was taken to Baptist Health Mariners Hospital in Tavernier, where she agreed to a sexual assault examination. Her injuries were not life-threatening, and she was later released to a family member.
The Counterfeit Cash That Pulled in the Secret Service
Detectives from the Monroe County Major Crimes Unit executed a search warrant at the home, and the dryer turned out to be only the start of what they found. While collecting evidence, investigators came across “several sheets” of counterfeit currency inside the residence.
Fake money is federal territory, so the sheriff’s office notified the U.S. Secret Service, the agency that handles counterfeiting cases in addition to protecting presidents. There’s no word yet on whether Veit will face separate federal charges over the bogus bills, but the case file now has the Secret Service attached to it.
What Else Detectives Hauled Out of the House
The search warrant turned up a pile of physical evidence that, according to investigators, lined up with what the girl had told them. Deputies recovered four iPhones, including the victim’s own phone, along with an iPad. They also collected bed sheets and two bags that belonged to her.
Detectives said the items helped corroborate the teen’s account that there had been ongoing sexual activity between her and Veit. The Florida Department of Children and Families was notified after the incident, and the girl was placed under the care of a relative.
The Charges and the $650,000 Bond
Jail records show Veit is charged with kidnapping, interference with child custody, and four counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor age 16 or 17. He refused to answer detectives’ questions without a lawyer present and was booked into the Plantation Detention Facility before a planned transfer to Key West.
His bond was set at $650,000, and his arraignment is scheduled for August 4, 2026. The sheriff’s office has said additional charges may still be coming as the investigation continues. Veit, who reportedly worked in sales in the Keys, was initially held on a no-bond status.
For all the disturbing pieces of this case, the part that keeps standing out is the simplest one. A teenager who’d had her phone taken, who’d been coached to hide in an appliance, and who was surrounded by a man she said she was afraid of, still found a few seconds alone to grab a phone, dial three numbers, and whisper for help. According to the sheriff’s office, that call is the reason deputies knew to keep searching the house after Veit swore no one else was there.
She’s now back with family. Veit is sitting in a cell waiting on a court date. And a clothes dryer in Key Largo became evidence in a case that, by every account in the report, the girl cracked open herself with a phone she wasn’t supposed to be holding.
