Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was hundreds of miles away at training camp when his phone lit up with the kind of news no parent wants. His wife, Mia, had been shot inside their own home in Ashburn, Virginia. The person police arrested for it was their 27-year-old son, Elijah Zion Bieniemy.
This is a story about a family that had it all on paper, a coach chasing another Super Bowl run, a home in the D.C. suburbs, two grown sons. Then in one Sunday evening it turned into a crime scene with deputies running through the neighborhood and a mother in surgery. Here is what actually happened, based on what police and the courts have released so far.
Mia Bieniemy called 911 herself after being shot twice
The part of this story that stuck with people the most is how Mia got help. She did not wait for someone else to make the call. According to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, the 57-year-old dialed 911 herself after being shot, even with fresh gunshot wounds.
Sheriff Mike Chapman confirmed she made that call, and officials called it remarkable given how badly she was hurt. She was shot in the left forearm and the shoulder, and the round traveled across her chest. She needed surgery, and a piece of the bullet still remains inside her body. That is a lot to go through and still have the presence of mind to grab a phone and get deputies moving toward the house.
The weapon was a .22-caliber firearm
One detail that came straight out of the criminal complaint filed by prosecutors: the gun used was a .22-caliber firearm. That specific fact appeared in the paperwork along with the note that a portion of a projectile stayed lodged in Mia’s body after her operation.
The shooting happened Sunday evening, July 26, 2026. Deputies got the call around 7:30 p.m. and arrived at the home to find Mia with multiple gunshot wounds. She was rushed to a hospital right away and was listed in stable condition by Monday. As of the following days, she had been moved out of the ICU, which the Chiefs and doctors treated as a good sign.
Elijah Bieniemy faces three felony charges and no bond
Elijah Zion Bieniemy was arrested at the scene and booked into the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center in Leesburg. He was charged with three felonies: malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling.
He is being held without bond. Those are serious charges that carry the possibility of decades behind bars if it goes that far. An arraignment was on the calendar for Monday morning but got continued. Online court records listed a public defender as his attorney. Elijah is the younger of Eric and Mia’s two sons. His older brother is Eric Bieniemy III. According to his father’s old University of Colorado bio, Elijah was just 12 when it was written, and he has no prior criminal record in Virginia.
A neighbor’s video caught the police response
You do not usually get to see how these things unfold in real time, but a neighbor did. Cell phone video shot from a nearby home showed the scene on Northpark Drive as it played out.
The clip opens with deputies running through the neighborhood, at least one with a rifle drawn. They blocked off the streets with cruisers and secured the area before going inside. The footage also shows officers walking a man out in handcuffs, believed to be Elijah. Later video showed Mia being escorted from the home after being carried to safety. Sheriff Chapman said there is no threat to the public since the arrest happened right there at the house.
The Ashburn home was a leftover from Eric’s Commanders job
Here is a small piece that ties the whole thing together. The family kept a home in Ashburn, Virginia, even though Eric’s coaching jobs kept bouncing him around the country. That house came with the Washington job. Eric bought it in July 2023, according to county property records, when he took the coordinator gig with the Commanders.
He moved on from Washington after that team struggled, but the family held onto the Virginia property. Elijah listed an Ashburn address of his own. So while Eric was in Missouri getting ready for a new season in Kansas City, part of his family was still living in the D.C. area, in a house he had picked up for a job that did not last. Investigators say there had been no prior incidents reported at that home before this.
Eric Bieniemy left training camp to be with his family
Eric had been on the field in St. Joseph, Missouri, running the Chiefs offense during their second practice of camp. By Monday he was gone. ESPN reported he had left the team to support Mia and was not at practice.
If the name Eric Bieniemy rings a bell, there is a reason. He was part of Andy Reid’s first staff in Kansas City back in 2013, coaching running backs for five seasons before getting bumped up to offensive coordinator. He held that job from 2018 to 2022 and helped the Chiefs reach three Super Bowls and win two of them. He interviewed for head coaching jobs over and over and kept getting passed over. So he left in 2023 to try to build his resume, first with the Commanders, then one season as offensive coordinator at UCLA, then a year coaching running backs for the Chicago Bears. He came back to Kansas City this year, rehired in January 2026 to run the offense again.
Andy Reid and the Chiefs kept it simple
Andy Reid has been through his own family pain over the years, and he did not try to spin this or dodge it. He spoke plainly after Monday’s practice.
“Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy,” Reid said. “Mia is stable, which is a plus. We all love EB, and you hate seeing those things happen. Real life. You take care of that. She’s a saint, one of God’s good blessings. But things happen.” Reid said there is no timeline for Eric’s return and that pass game coordinator Joe Bleymaier, along with Andy Heck, would cover the coordinator duties. The team said in a statement it was aware of the incident but did not add more.
Mia is making progress, and the next court date is set
By Wednesday, July 29, the Chiefs held their first full team practice of camp, still without Eric. Reid gave a positive update on Mia, saying she was making progress and that Eric was right where he needed to be.
“EB’s still with her, and that part is important that that takes place,” Reid said. “Eric’s a big part of this. Right now, it’s important he takes care of business. Eric will be back soon enough.” On the field, Bieniemy’s return had been a big deal for the roster. Travis Kelce had pointed to it as one reason he pushed off retirement, calling Bieniemy one of his favorite coaches.
For now, the legal side moves forward slowly. Elijah Bieniemy remains in custody with no bond, and his next scheduled court date is a preliminary hearing on August 31 at 10 a.m. Officials have not shared a motive. Sheriff Chapman said his team still has to work through where everyone was, what they did, and what set the shooting off. “We’re conducting that investigation right now,” he said. Eric and Mia have not spoken publicly about any of it, which, given what they are dealing with, is easy to understand.
